Gerasim Nikitich was born in the village of Votma (near Vanzevat) of Beryozovsky District of Ostyako-Vogulsky National Okrug in the family of a reindeer herder and a fisherman. He graduated 3 grades in Polnovat school. In 1947–1965, he worked at the collective farm as a shepherd and a reindeer herder. At the end of 1949, the family moved to Vanzevat. Before retirement, Gerasim Nikitich worked at the collective farm named after Pobeda as a fisherman and a hunter. He was the performer of sacred songs of the ritual complex "Bear’s Holiday". He took over the performing arts from his fellow men of the older generation
